My Best Body Ever | Windsor Fitness & Weight Loss

Dr Jason Haas | Windsor COToday, I’m getting personal. I have had my share of health struggles and I wanted to share my personal experience at getting myself into the best shape of my life. My name is Jason Haas, I’m 43 years old and I have definitely not been in my current physical condition my whole life. I have dealt with many, many injuries over the years.

I was struck in the head with a baseball bat (full swing) at age 4. I played contact football from age 5 to age 15 and also played baseball and soccer. I received many blows to the head and probably had at least one concussion. I was the “attacker” while training women in self-defense doing Martial arts in my early 20’s. I’ve been kicked in the head, punched in the face, took a few elbows and generally got beat on by women that were really angry (rightfully so) and conveniently had a “warm body” to take their anger out on while learning self-defense.

When I was living in Boulder I drove off a cliff in Happy Canyon. I was in a front impact car crash as a 16 years old. When I was 22, I was struck from behind while stopped by a Snap-On™ tool truck; he didn’t brake. I have fallen on the ice hundreds of times and even took a few falls last weekend on the rocks at Lake Agnes. In 2003, I was lifting an Omni® chiropractic table (340 lbs.) into the back of a van and received a very serious disc injury to my lower back. Then, during my daughters first few years of life, I put on nearly 40 lbs. of body fat and suffered with daily pain, high blood pressure, low energy and generally was not in good shape.

Now, at 43, I can say with absolute certainty that I am in the best shape of my life. In spite of all of my previous injuries, I do not suffer with pain. I am 9.86% body fat and can work out harder than I ever imagined. I’m not restricted in any of my activities whatsoever. I have a better body than many of the high school boys that walk by our office everyday on their way to Taco Bell® or Sonic® (no surprise there).

How did I overcome all of my prior injuries, weight gain, and poor lifestyle? Simply by practicing what I preach to my patients on a daily basis. I follow a very nutritious eating plan that allowed me to lose 35 pounds in 7 weeks and I have kept that weight off for six years. I use the Power Plate for whole body training 2-4 times per week and use the Vertical Training System 2 times per week. I drink plenty of water, take some great supplements and do my best to play music, meditate, and shut off my brain when I can. I had my neck rehabilitated by Dr. Doug Terry using CBP® in Boulder in the 90’s and then used our CBP® equipment to rehab my low back after the 2003 injury. I have done everything I can to get more flexible, stronger and develop my endurance. I feel like I have sculpted a body that can take punishment and not suffer from pain and I have refined my nutrition to the point that I am leaner than I have ever previously been.

Every Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm Dr Jason Haas delivers a complimentary seminar about a variety of health related topics. How to maintain a balanced diet, the effects of stress, and energy sustaining foods are just a few amongst many interesting subjects. His expert public speaking skills are inspirational and he breaks all the technical jargon down into layman’s terms. Following the seminar there is the opportunity for new people to ask questions and go through the basics of the nutritional counseling program. As a reward, Benchmark Dollars will be presented to those who bring new guests along to the classes.


We are receiving rave reviews from our physical therapy patients about the overall effectiveness of the Vertical Training System. They are experiencing increased strength, mobility and balance. The amazing thing about the VTS is how much you can gain physically in such a small amount of time. A typical session only takes 10-15 minutes and engages over 200 muscles simultaneously, while tapping into the sympathetic nervous system. We have some more equipment on order and will have classes up and running very soon. VTS is a brilliant addition to any exercise and rehabilitation program.

Les is still very much connected to ice hockey and commentates for the local game season.


The school year has kicked off and there are sixty new teachers hired in the district. We were at the breakfast to support the new teachers and donated some vouchers for their goody bags. Teachers play such an integral part in the children’s development, so we want them to be as healthy as possible. Benchmark has initiated some wellness talks for teachers at some of the local schools. Dr Sandy Haas will be touching on topics such as stress to combat fatigue and promote wellbeing.

The great thing is that all ages and body types can easily master the basics and reap the benefits of working the brain and muscles in perfect harmony.

I am so excited to be on this journey, and I am sharing it with you to help the people out there that may have some of these similar problems.  I have been suffering with health problems for years, but I have trained myself to not express these problems. I have become a very good actor. Well, that finally caught up with me last year when my stress levels and my health problems led me to pass out.

I struck my head very hard and had to face the fact that something was seriously wrong and I needed to change. At that time, I weighed 147 pounds, my body fat was too high and my blood work pointed to the signs of major thyroid issues, pre-diabetes, possible heart disease, adrenal fatigue and emotional duress.  

Since then I have been on a very strict journey to get my health under control. I have cut out nearly all “bad” carbohydrates, increased my exercise, and I am working on improving my posture, strength, and range of motion. I underwent many blood and laboratory tests designed to see if there are deficiencies in micro- or macro-nutrients that may contribute to these health problems.

I discovered that I am positive for carrying the MTHFR gene, which means I do not process certain B-vitamins properly and therefore have an increased risk of cancer and heart disease, along with many other potential conditions. In addition, I am positive for LipoProtein A (Lp a), which is a risk factor for heart disease.

Now that I have found these problems, I have used intermittent fasting, improved my hydration, started taking the correct nutrients, and I try to be in ketosis as frequently as possible. The results are beginning to show!  

I’m down 8 pounds, have lost body fat, my mood has improved and I am feeling better everyday! Many Benefits of Ketosis | Windsor Colorado Weight Loss


In a typical American/Western diet, carbohydrates are consumed at levels that far exceed what the body needs to convert them to glycogen to for energy. This is the case as well as with most diet plans that are intended to induce weight loss. The problem is that if carbs exceed a certain amount, the body will continue to use this sugar for energy and the conversion to using fat and triglycerides as an energy source will never occur.

This can result in weight loss if the calories consumed are less than the calories burned, but the weight loss will not target fat and in the presence of inadequate protein, lean muscle mass may be lost as well. The loss of lean muscle mass is a huge problem because it can lead to further health problems and loss of organ proteins too.

The Medical Weight Loss Program at our Windsor Colorado health center is different. We are targeting fat loss, not body weight loss alone, and not basing our results just on the number on the scale. Free fat mass, visceral fat and total body fat are all incorporated into our analyses to ensure that the weight our dieters lose is fat only, not muscle or organ proteins. The way that this is accomplished is by restricting carbohydrates to levels that cause the conversion to ketosis, while providing ideal amounts of protein; not too much, not too little.

Ketosis is a natural state where the body gets its energy from the fat consumed in the diet and the supplies of body fat. This state has been much maligned in the past primarily due to some of the hyper-protein diets that allow excessive consumption of fat and meat, leading some to experience poorer health. Again, our program is not at hyper-protein diet, we provide the perfect amount of protein, healthy fats and restrict the carbohydrates.

Ketosis is an incredible state to live in! First, the consumption of fat as an energy source is much more effective at generating energy because there are 9 calories (units of energy) per gram of fat produced compared to 4 for carbs and protein. 2nd, ketosis has huge benefits beyond significant fat loss and preservation of lean muscle mass.

The medical literature has extensive references to the benefits of ketosis and the studies are truly mind-blowing. Some of the earliest studies on the ketogenic diet showed that epileptic seizures are significantly reduced, if not resolved completely, on this type of diet. Children with epilepsy respond incredibly well to the ketogenic diet and the results are phenomenal for improvements in their quality of life. Ketosis also has been shown to have anti-neoplastic effects and may less the spread of malignant cancers.

Ketosis reduces inflammation in the body, largely in part by controlling the insulin produced by the pancreas. This restriction in insulin has many other benefits but the reduction in inflammation is a major factor for our patients who are suffering from painful arthritis or other inflammatory conditions. Inflammation is associated with increased risk of cancer and metastasis and can lead to many debilitating conditions. Ketosis also preserves bone mass and has an effect on aerobic performance in athletes, improving endurance, lung and oxygen perfusion and improved muscle flexibility.

Ketosis can reduce the abnormal pancreas cells in the type 2 diabetic patients, resulting in fewer medications, and a complete reversal of the disease in many who sustain a ketosis state. Ketosis also improves circulation in diabetic patients and can thus prevent the complications such as amputation gangrene and blindness. Ketosis improves oxygen perfusion in al tissues and can improve aerobic capacity, and improve endurance overall.

One of the incredible events that we record frequently is a stunning drop in high blood pressure and resting heart rate. We have several patients whom are taken off of their blood pressure medications by their prescribing doctors in a matter of a few weeks of being on the this program, and they also report a reduced resting heart rate, thus improving cardiovascular function overall. The literature has also reported a reduction in atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary arteries with ketosis and thus a reduced likelihood of heart attack. There are also studies that show that patients with traumatic brain injuries respond better to a carbohydrate restricted program than those that follow a high carbohydrate/low fat program.

And, of course, we see tremendous losses of body fat and preservation of lean muscle mass on the ketogenic program. This results in looking better, feeling better, having more energy and overall improvement in quality of life! 5 Tips to Speed Up Weight Loss | Windsor Weight Loss

Windsor Weight Loss ClinicOur patients lose weight. They lose lots of weight. They lose it fast and when they do what we tell them to do, they keep it off. However, there are always patients that wish to know some of the ways to speed up weight loss and body fat reduction. Here are some of the tips we cover at our complimentary Tuesday night nutrition and life coaching workshops.

1) Get More Sleep
Sleep is a critical component of improving weight loss and studies have shown that increasing sleep can accelerate fat loss. The body needs sleep to heal from injuries, recover from colds and flu, and sleep is necessary in the balance of our hormones, protein regulation and mood. Sleeping just an hour or two more per night can accelerate the fat loss program and most patients who improve sleep see other health conditions improve. Put away the smartphone, turn off the TV and turn darken the room, don’t let the room get above 72°, have some white noise and you will see quick results with better sleep and fat loss as a bonus!

2) Eat the Right Kind of Fat
It sounds crazy for me to talk about eating more fat when you want to lose body weight and reduce body fat, but fat matters! If you choose the wrong kind of fat, your body will not get sustainable energy, your cells won’t get the nutrients they need through their cell membranes and your brain will suffer! Eating essential fatty acids (EFA’s) is the first step and these fats are necessary for every cell in your body to function normally. Getting 3-6 grams of Omega 3 EFA’s daily can increase the enzymes necessary to burn fat and can aid in elimination and bowel movements, improve heart function, reduce the risk of stroke and improve gut health. Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT’s) are an important source of energy. Coconut oil, olive oil and grape seed oils are great oils to choose when eaten raw, when cooked, these are still great oils, but only to low temperatures. The higher the temp, the more the oils break down and the less energy we’ll get from them. Getting more of the right fat is better for your brain, your heart and your waist line!

3) Sweat!
Our body has an amazing system to remove and eliminate toxic substances. Sweating is a natural detoxifier and generating a sweat can get your metabolism pumping, increase your elimination and improve your skin. When you are well hydrated and really sweat, your fat literally begins to melt and you can see very significant changes quickly with frequent sweating sessions. Sweating should, of course, come from exercise, however there are other ways to get a good sweat, including steam and Infrared saunas, sweat suits, and hot baths with herbs that can produce a nice, whole body sweat. Use caution that you are plenty hydrated, have a diet rich in vitamins and minerals and sweating can be an excellent way to increase fat loss.

4) Spice It Up!
Many herbs and spices have medicinal properties. These herbs include turmeric, ginger, clove, cinnamon, oregano, basil, black pepper and garlic, just to name a few. Used liberally, these spices and herbs have the ability to improve your immune system and reduce your risk for dangerous inflammation. These herbs can help with pain, help improve gut health and have been used for thousands of years to successfully treat numerous health conditions. When combined with spicy foods like jalapeno and habanero and cayenne peppers, these foods also have a stimulatory effect of the metabolism. These metabolism stimulators can get your stubborn fat moving! If you’re not sweating when you’re eating, spice it up!

5) Count the Carbs
Carbohydrates can be an important part of human nutrition, however, our society has been over-dependent on sugary carbs and we eat grains, breads, and even sugary fruits and juices in quantities that cause our pancreas to over-produce insulin, and this in turns leads to fat storage, unregulated blood sugar, and eventually diabetes. Our consumption of carbohydrates far, far exceeds that of our ancestors and the consequences are disastrous for public health. The effect is literally killing us. Until we get our carbohydrate addiction under control, we are doomed to higher rates and younger cases of diabetes, worsening heart disease and Alzheimer’s, and a society that has a majority of people who are disabled due to obesity.

Learning to control our intake of carbs can not only help our pancreas heal and improve our blood sugar and diabetic conditions, when carbs are controlled enough, the body can re-regulate energy from sugar to fat. Kick the Sugar, Change Your Life | Windsor Weight Loss

windsor-colorado-weight-loss-dietSugar is our first addiction. Whether its mom’s milk sugar or formula, we grow accustomed to, depend on, and become highly addicted to sugar from the very start. Now, it’s practically everywhere. Almost every “brand name” food had added sugar. Especially, if you’re purchasing pre-packaged, fast-food and “economy” foods.

The effect of the sugar addiction starting when we’re babies is becoming more important than ever. And more deadly. 70% of Americans over 20 years old are overweight and obesity in some states is pushing 50%. We are in a terrible crisis as a result of foods loaded with extra sugar. Additionally, those same foods have added fat and this deadly combination is the reason why people gain fat, get diabetes, develop Alzheimer’s, and have inflammation ravaging their joints.

Sugar causes the pancreas to release Insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar, the more the sugar is detected in the bloodstream, the more the pancreas releases insulin. If there is a balance then when the sugar is gone, the body returns to homeostasis and the balance maintains a healthy blood sugar state.

However, when the balance is tipped in favor of the sugar intake, the pancreas tries hard to keep up, but if the load of sugar gets too high, the body will begin to feel the effects of early pre-diabetes; fluctuations in blood sugar affect energy, mood, strength, concentration, coordination, water balance and others functions. Nearly every tissues is altered when blood sugar is not controlled. When sugar is allowed to dominate the system, inflammation and thus pain cascades. Eventually, all that sugar starts to stick to the blood cells going to distant tissues and begins to change how well those organs and body parts work. All those blood cells saturated with sugar damage nerves, muscle, skin, organs and the entire system begins to break down.

Misfiring nerves cause pain, pins and needles, numbness and tingling, loss of coordination, imbalance and terrible energy. We need those nerves for every cell, tissue and organ in the body to work right!

The over-eating of carbs must stop! If we as a society can’t get control of the sugar, pasta, grains, high-fructose corn syrup, rice, alcohol, and sugary beverages like soda and juice, we’re doomed! The short answer is they are both important but again and again, in the laboratory, medical weight loss clinic, and in the gym, sleep wins as the number-one most important factor in losing weight, gaining muscle and perfecting and balancing your body.

Exercise has tremendous benefits such as improved circulation, testosterone production, brain and heart health as well as reduced body fat. However exercise is often not intense enough to stimulate fat loss and not long enough to boost the metabolism. In mathematical terms, one pound of body fat is about 3500 calories. Therefore, in order to burn one pound of fat with exercise, you must burn 3500 calories. Easy, right? Just go run a marathon!

Personally, my joints wouldn’t be very happy with me if I had to work that had for only one pound of fat burned. I am not interested in creating repetitive stress injuries in pursuit of the perfect body. The solution? Exercise smartly, eat exceptionally, but first, go to bed!

Sleep plays critical roles in improving our ability to create hormones necessary to stimulate our metabolism. Sleep is our restorative and recuperative process that “re-sets” our hormonal clock. Recent research has shown that your genetic biological clock is not only found in your brain, but also in other critical organs like your pancreas, liver, kidneys and even directly in your body fat! Sleep enables all of these organs to work in concert with each other to perfect the chemical and hormonal balance that is your metabolism.

It only takes a small disruption in your circadian clock to disrupt your metabolism’s chemical and hormonal balance. Once this disruption occurs repeatedly, the systems no longer work together and the result is obesity, diabetes, heart disease and even cancers. If your pancreas is not allowed enough sleep time, your blood sugar will not regulate normally and the fluctuation of unregulated of low blood sugar and high blood sugar eventually cascades into diabetes. Kidneys, brain and other organs disrupted by a lack of sleep or poor sleep habits begin to function abnormally as well.

Fat has its own genetic circadian rhythm and if your sleep patterns are repetitively disrupted, the metabolic hormones necessary to burn excess body fat are disrupted. Then, hormones like cortisol begin to deposit fat instead of burning it. Critical brain hormones necessary for muscle recovery after exercise, muscle mass gains and general well-being are disrupted by a lack of sleep. Eventually, this disruption in the “feel-good” hormones of dopamine and serotonin and others can cascade into fluctuations of anxiety, depression and mood disorders.

So, what do you choose? Get up early and disrupt your circadian rhythm with exercise, or sleep in? In terms of the overall benefits, sleep will trump exercise every time. The real key to getting it right is perfecting the balance necessary between sleep (hormone regulation), nutrition (fuel for the system), and exercise (perfecting the machine).

Bottom line is that sleeping just two extra hours per night for as little as two weeks can stimulate more fat loss, balance more hormones and improve mood and outlook more than exercise alone. If you can get your sleep to improve, you will quickly notice you have more energy, more strength, fewer colds, a better quality of life and improved weight loss.
